They explain how technol- ogy is developing very quickly in our modern day society and why it is im- portant to reflect upon and to critique designs in the industry to develop alter- native and more sustainable visions. They explain how there are two catego- ries of design: the affirmative and the critical. Affirmative design reinforces how designs currently are based on so- cial, cultural, economic and technical expectations. Critical design rejects how designs currently are and provides cri- tiques as well as alternative social, cul- tural, economic and technical values. A major issue that the authors explore is the idea of successful or “popular” de- sign which is created for the market- place. The main purpose of many de- signers is to create new products which are better, smarter and faster than the previous with the goal to make a large profit. It has come to the attention that major corporations now have a larger influence on reality than the government and buying power is more successful than voting power. Critical design cri- tiques the ideas behind popular design to think about what we really need in society as well as to develop a discus- sion amongst other designs, the public and major corporations.
