“Desiree’s Baby” Written Response

PROMPT: L’Abri, the French name of Armand Aubigney’s plantation, means “the shelter.” Identify and explain fully the ironies (more than one) that emerge in relation to the name L’Abri. What might be Chopin’s purpose for emphasizing such ironies?

Kate Chopin, author of “Desiree’s baby,” decided to use the French word, L’Abri, for the name of Armand Aubigney’s plantation to create irony in her short story. The first instance of irony in this story relates to the beginning of the story, when Desiree was discovered abandoned and was only able to utter the word “dada.” The author shows that she was fatherless and it is ironic now because, after eighteen years, Desiree’s child is now fatherless the same way
