Tutu was the first South African to receive the Nobel Peace Prize award since Albert Luthuli in 1960. In 1987, he was named the president of the All Africa Conference of Churches, a position he held until 1997. Tutu retired from public life in the late 1990’s. In 2007, Tutu joined The Elders, a group of experienced world leaders who meet to discuss ways to encourage human rights and world peace. Desmond Tutu wrote many books over the years including, No Future Without Forgiveness (1999), the children's title God's Dream (2008) and The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World (2016). Tutu was an inspiration to many people because of his accomplishments and he gave people inspiration and courage about things in life.
