Throughout Greene’s novel, Fowler and deception work hand in hand to attain what he believes he wants. Whether it be his love affair, his friend, or when life hangs in the balance, Fowler is more than ready to lie for his own gain. Lying to people around him as well as to himself leads to his own belief in the lies and slander, inevitably changing his perception of the truth.
