Determinism is the idea that everyone's life has been predetermined for them and, that anything that happens could have not gone another way. Also if when we were born all of our environments, genes were already determined to set us up for what we were made to do then at no point could our actions be up to us because everything has already been predetermined. When an event is determined it is not the same as being predictable, this statement would make determinism true because there is no one who can predict what happens next. The deterministic view describes free will as something that is not really there, this view believes we have no freedom in the choices a person makes. Furthermore, while free will thinks that there could have been many other outcomes if the person choose to do something different, determinist B. F. Skinner believed this to be wrong because he thought that different options are illusions and that we repeat past behaviors (McLeod). So if the choices are illusions that would mean that a person is not responsible for their actions, but they can be held responsible for their actions. Many think that if determinism is the truth, then we would take away their freedom, but it is more like the person does not have freedom to do whatever but more like they can do what they want even if they were already determined to do it. Likewise, determinists believe when we make choices, we only have one choice in our mind, because when a person wakes up in the morning, they have most likely already decided what their breakfast is going to be without giving another choice a thought.
