Detroit disassembled is a published book cataloguing the city of Detroit’s decline over the last few years. Andrew Moore’s work combines traditions of fine art and a documentary style which broadens his audience, from those looking to study his artistic abilities to those, like myself, wanting to study the implications of a modern cities decline into ruins.
Since Ford’s removal of business from the city, once referred to as “The Motor City”, Detroit has fallen into a serious state of dilapidation. In today’s world the city is reminiscent of a post apocalyptic zone, as whole areas of the city have been abandoned. The book thus aims to demonstrate and shed light onto the shocking reality of it’s current condition. The images are clearly meant to make the viewer think and question what the possible implications might be. They question our society. They question government. They question capitalism, history and our humanity, and juxtapose these questions to the lost hopes of detroit.

However Andrew Moore is not an historian, nor is he involved in any scientific or political research, he is merely artistically demonstrating a cities decline. This might be a positive thing in some lights but it does also throw shade into how he is representing the city. In order for the images to sell they need to retain a certain level of shock value, so it is to be expected that the images in his book are likely to be of shocking subject matter thus, possibly, hyperbolizing the situation. It would take further research to argue that he has not done
