Both the movie and the book put this part in their storyline, concluding that this an extremely important part of the story and should not be left out. Also in both the book and movie, Hannah is offered a dress to wear at the wedding where she either turns it down completely or makes a fuss about wearing it. They both portray her as childish in the dress that she chooses, adequately demonstrating the idea of her as being selfish and conceited in the beginning of the story. This ends up being important to the theme, for Hannah would never have learned how to be the altruistic girl she came to be. Both the movie and the book teach the lesson that we must always remember what happened during the Holocaust so that those who were sacrificed will not ever be forgotten.
The Devil’s Arithmetic is a beautiful story that describes what the Jews went through in the terrible concentration camps under the abusive control of the Nazi officers. Both the movie and the book share common characters, plot events, and themes just as much as they differ from each other in all of those categories.
