Hobart is the capital of the Australian island state Tasmania. Tasmania is at the South of the Australian main land in the Indian Ocean. The city Hobart was founded in 1803 by the British who sent their convicted felons to the island and established a penal colony, which means it was first populated by British. The area of Hobart was before that inhabited by the Pottawatomie Indians. The first beginnings of Hobart was a small town that was called Liverpool. This small town was not successful. In 1847 an Englishman named George Earle recorded a new town in 1849, and named it for his brother, Frederick Hobart Earle, of England.
Hobart is Australia's second oldest capital city. The first one is Sydney in New South Wales. The city is located in the state's south-east on the estuary of the Derwent River, making it the most southern of Australia's capital cities.
