With Cubism, Rivera was different from his fellow artists by adding more color and creating his art on a larger scale than most. He even used textured surfaces to create a variety in his art, while still adding references to his native heritage. In 1916, Rivera unveiled one of his cubism pieces called “Motherhood Angelina and the Child”, which was based on his first wife, Angelina Beloff who was also an artist, and their first son, who sadly died few months after his birth. The painting portrays the mother breast feeding their child, while using the cubism style of art to slightly mask their faces. Not only is it done with vivid colors, but it also does a remarkable job at making sure there is no improper representation or space to degrade the art form.
