Although New England and the Chesapeake region were both settled largely by people of English origin. By 1700 the regions had evolved into two distinct societies. At this time Englishmen of the same origin were settling along the east coast of North America. Each of the societies was founded for different purposes but under the same climate. New England was founded for religious purposes. The puritans were persecuted in England because they wanted New England. The separatists found Plymouth and broke away from the Anglican Church. The Anglican Church’s reform was too slow so the Puritans found the Massachusetts Bay colony. The Puritans found Connecticut. Because they wanted a closer bond between the church and the government.
