Biology 12 Digestion Research Project 1. Decide if you want to work by yourself or with a partner (max of 2 people per group). Only one project per group needs to be submitted. 2. Choose one of the following types of digestive disorders or diseases. If you think of another one that you would like to do that is not on this list, check with your teacher to have it approved. · diabetes Type I or II
· colon cancer
· GastroEsophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
· hepatitis
· cirrhosis
· cancer (colon, pancreatic, mouth, etc.)
· short bowel syndrome
· Irritiable Bowel Disesase (Crohn’s or ulcerative colitis)
· Irritable Bowel Syndrome
· Celliac’s Disease
· lactose intolerance
· ulcers
· diarrhea
· constipation · gall stones 3. Create an outline for your research. Divide a page into 8 sections: Appearance (what the disease “looks” like and feels like)

Paragraph:

Lactose intolerance is the inability to digest lactose, and is not caused by a foreign pathogen or bacteria, therefore it has no appearance. It just just caused because the body is unable to produce the lactose enzyme that helps break down the sugars found in dairy products. This just causes bacteria to break down the lactose instead of the enzymes. Which causes people to be very uncomfortable. It may cause diarrhea, bloating, and gas. Being lactose intolerant is normal and some people do not consider it be even be a disease. 75 percent of the world's population has lactose intolerance.

Pancreas (Smith, 2004)
Paragraph:
Lactose intolerance mostly affects the small intestine because it is unable to produce the enzyme needed to breakdown the sugars found in dairy products. This causes the sugars to sit in the large intestine until bacteria comes to break down the sugars. (shareware, 2011) This causes people to have uncomfortable gas, diarrhea and bloating problems. (Nemours, 2012)

How the disease “works” (how someone gets it, how it develops over time, etc.)
Paragraph:
Usually when someone eats something that has lactose in it an enzyme created in the small intestine breaks down the lactose ion glucose and galactose. These two are easily absorbed into the bloodstream and turned into energy for the body, however if someone is lactose intolerant their body does not produce enough of the enzyme to break down lactose so the undigested lactose just sits in the gut and gets broken down by bacteria. This can cause gas, bloating and many other symptoms that are not life threatening. It is something that someone usually gets as they age because as they get old their body produces less and less of the enzyme needed to break down lactose. People may also become lactose intolerant because of an injury that has affected their small intestine, causing it to stop producing the enzyme. In many rare cases children can also be born without the ability to produce the enzyme. http://kidshealth.org/teen/food_fitness/nutrition/lactose_intolerance.html http://www.fbhc.org/Patients/Modules/lactose.cfmf|How the disease affects the digestive process (make connections to what we have learned in class)
Paragraph:
Lactose intolerance mostly affects the digestive system. It starts off in the small intestine, where cells do not produce enough of the enzyme that helps break down lactose that is the sugar in dairy. This means that the body cannot absorb the sugar which causes it to move into the large intestine. Bacteria then ferments the sugar which can cause symptoms such as gas, bloating cramps and diarrhea. Usually these symptoms are mild and not life threatening but can cause weight loss in some people. (shareware, 2011)
