Direct rule is when European officials replace local leaders. It was used by the British and French whenever local leaders resisted colonial rule. The central government invokes a strong relationship between its law and citizens. It provides for more control because essentially the central authority is making all the laws for the other country. Indirect rule is when local leaders are allowed to maintain their authority. The colonial power cooperates with local leaders. It is essentially a weaker form of government allowing some local people to make decisions regarding the law. Primarily, the British used indirect
