All nurses must refer to the NHS constitution and the 6c’s of nursing and apply it to all aspects of care in an attempt to provide patients with the most effective care making their experience a positive one. The 6 C’s of nursing are care, compassion, competence, communication, courage, and commitment. Good communication is part of being a competent nurse without it a nurse is failing to provide their patients with the best care possible. So it clear good communication is important. There should be a “no decision about me without me” with all decisions by all in care and staff alike. A good nurse should understand that listening is just as important if not more important when communicating clearly. It’s important that when nurses are making assessments and giving treatment that they ensure any communication issues are made note of and overcome (glasses, hearing aids, advocates), by doing this their ensuring that their patient is able to make decisions for themselves with complete transparency being clear on where they are with their recovery will make it easier for them to improve. It’s important not to completely focus on communication as the other c’s are just as relevant when caring for the elderly. Treating patients with compassion may appear to be an obvious but with the elderly there may be a lack of similar age related experiences which may cause problems, most nurses can only use their imagination when considering what certain experiences feel like. Focusing on the patient and assessing their reactions to certain things will make this easier.
