Disney expanded and started divisions that focused upon theater, radio, music, publishing, and online media. Also, Disney has created corporate divisions to market to family-oriented brands. The Walt Disney Studios is known to be one of the largest and best-known studios in American cinema. In addition, Disney owns and operates the ABC broadcast television network and other networks such as Disney Channel, ESPN, A+E Networks and ABC Family; publishing, merchandising, music, and theatre divisions. They also own and license 14 theme parks around the world.
Walt Disney has been producing animated short films since the year of 1923. The Walt Disney Studios is the film division of the Walt Disney Company. As of now, the Walt Disney Studios releases films from both Disney and non- Disney owned animation studios. Most films such as, Dumbo and Bambi began as the animation division of Walt Disney Products. In 1937, Snow White was the first produced feature-length animated film. 2
As of 2014 a total of 54 films that Walt Disney studios have been produced. The Walt Disney studios also released animated films by Pixar Animation Studios, which started with Toy Story in 1995. Other studio units have also released films theatrically, Disney Toon Studios that collects film rights from outside animation studios release films under Walt Disney Pictures and Touchstone Pictures
Sexism or gender discrimination is prejudice or discrimination based on a person’s sex or gender. Sexist attitudes may have started from the traditional stereotypes of gender roles. This may also include the belief that a person of one sex is superior to a person of the other.
Media is a type of outlet that cannot be ignored or neglected in our modern society. Also it is considered to be a powerful tool of communication. The media influences people how to think and shapes what we know and understand about the world. It also impacts the society in both negative and positive ways.
Sexism in media can be a problem because teens or females are the victims of this. Sexism in media turns out to be good for marketing companies because of the advertising saying “Sex sells.” But issues related to sexism in media should be taken seriously. Sexism in media cannot be banned completely but the growing rate of sexism should at least be minimized. Sex should not be used as an instrument to gain the public’s attention. They do not only exploit a child’s innocence but also show women as sex objects.
For example, in such advertisements women’s bodies are being misused which can present women as piece of entertainment. Such as Carl’s Jr commercial with Kate Upton and the Super Bowl ads and those are the types of advertisements do not only degrade the self-respect of women but in many ways insults them.
As little girls, we all idolized not just one but all the Disney Princesses during our childhood. Today it is amazing how many young girls can quickly grasp and mimic these princesses. These Movies have promoted the idea of following your heart and all your dreams will come true. Realistically it’s not like that because it is only with hard work that your dreams will come true.
This impact goes beyond the products in stores, the movies we see, and the theme parks we go to, but it affects people eternally, especially on young girls. These Disney princesses have left a legacy of over 72 years of sexism. These movies and these princesses have left a sexist stereotype in regards to body, image, female roles, and relationships with men.
