Back in the late 1990's, Disnet was getting into the internet game with their ''go.com'' web portal, which led to sites like ESPN.com, ABCNews.com, and of course Disney.com. Disney also began selling merchandise online using DisneyStores.com, but they knew there was an untapped market in a growing sector online: video gaming. Around this time the MMORPG (Massively multiplayer online role-playing game) area was growing expanentionally, and Disney was looking to invest heavily in new games that people of all ages could enjoy. Disney had been building up a ''future of online games'' project in their research and development section for a few years, and in 1996 they began development of an MMO game entitled ''HercWorld''. This was going to be a game based off of Disney's film ''Hercules'', and would expand the franchise with new characters and story elements.
