According to Meredith Grey, fictional character, on Grey’s Anatomy, “People can be broken, sure, but any surgeon knows, what’s broken can be mended. What’s hurt can be healed. That no matter how dark it gets, the sun’s going to rise again.” A surgeon dedicates their life to helping everyone around them. The hands of a surgeon will always be in demand because the touch of a human cannot be replaced by a machine. In the medical field, surgeons are one of the most demanded jobs, due to how many people need medical attention daily. Without surgeons society would decrease; there would be no one to heal the broken, take care of postoperative patients, or save the lives of everyone else when in need. Surgeons also spend part of their day in the office doing consultations, and they see patients in the hospital (“Surgeon”). When it comes to working in an office, many surgeons choose to join pre existing practices instead of developing their own. Many doctors find leads to a practice they will join during medical school or residency. (“Surgeons” 759) The surgical practice can also be physically hazardous due to surgeons standing for up to 14 hours per surgery. The job can be draining when they are standing for such long periods of time. Most surgeons also will not have a set sleep schedule due to their long, irregular, and even overnight hours (“Physicians and Surgeons”). Most often a surgeon will work more than 12 hours a day and up to 60 hours a week (“Surgeon”). They must get a bachelor's degree in college. Then they must attend a four year medical school. Also as a surgeon they must complete a five year residency program. Plus depending on the chosen specialty some surgeons choose to do a two year fellowship in their field. All through school it is recommended to take as many health and science classes as possible, and it is beneficial to start taking those classes in high school (“Surgeon”). Although it is not required to be certified in every state, a surgeon must be licensed in the state that they are practicing (“Surgeons” 759). To become a licensed physician there are written and oral exams that must be passed, these are offered by the American Board of Medical Specialists
