Each year, about 1 in 9 babies are born prematurely. Many of those babies are called micro-preemies. A micro-preemie is a baby born before 26 weeks of gestation and weighs less than 1¾ pounds. Some people believe that these babies aren’t worth saving because of the toll on the economy and on the parents. They also believe that the odds are against the babies. Others believe that they should be saved because some babies may beat the odds and doctors shouldn’t prevent a baby from surviving just because the long-term effects may not be ideal.
