Does the American dream disappoint and destroy Americans? In “Death of a Salesman”, Arthur Miller presents a family with multiple problems. The man of the household may or may not have dementia. Death of a Salesman is a criticism of the American Dream and American way of living. Being materialistic and emotionally unstable are both presented in the story “Death of a Salesman. Willy tried to kill himself because he thought that he was worthless to his family because he he wasn’t making enough money to provide for his family. In the text it is stated, “ (angrily, taking them from her): I won’t have you mending stockings in this house! Now throw them out! (Linda puts the stockings in her pocket.)”(Arthur Miller; page 26) This statement by Willy was made after she had a flashback about Willy and his affair with a woman called, The Woman, in the text. Willy basically feels guilty because he manages to buy this woman stockings even though he is not wealthy. But after this scene he sees his wife, Linda mending her old stocking and gets mad because he feels guilty that he is unable to buy her, his wife, stockings but he manages to buy a woman that he his having an affair with stockings when she needs new stockings. The use of diction expresses how guilty Willy feels from what he’s done in the past. When he yells “Now throw them out!”(Arthur Miller; page 26), he emphasizes his guilt about not being able to buy Linda new stockings and his affair with The
