According to the textbook, a noise can be thought of as any unwanted sound that does not belong in the recording (Rumsey, McCormick 193). That is why it is necessary to get rid of this noise using the noise reduction systems. After listening to the vinyl recording and comparing it to the CD version, I came to realize how much difference noise reduction can make in the quality of the recording we listen to. One of many methods of reducing noise is the compansion process, in which pre-emphasis and de-emphasis is manipulated. During this process, the audio engineers can “compress the dynamic range of a signal during recording and [expand] it on replay” (Rumsey, McCormick 196).
