Does anyone truly know what democracy is because today it seems as though it is a figment of our imagination. Democracy means rule by the people being that society will endure justice and obtain equality. Consequently, our government is not exhibiting the true characteristics of democracy. Instead, we must substitute democracy for Dollarocracy. Dollarocracy means the rule of the dollar, “one dollar, one vote”. Where as Democracy is “one person, one vote.” America's ideology is crumbling before our eyes and is in a battle against the wealthy and elite.

The authors take a backtrack in time to 1907 when the Tillman Act was passed which forbidden corporations or banks in aiding federal campaigns. This allowed anyone to have an equal opportunity to compete in the election. As a result, corporations managed to find loops creating the foundation for elections as we see them today. By the 1960s, “campaign costs attributable mostly to the emergence of TV advertising” (McChesney and Nichols 2013: 23). Candidates turned to media outlets to promote themselves and their campaigns. Each year the amount of the election is increasing incomparsion to the year prior. Unfortunately, candidates no longer assert their own claims but instead choose to let the money do the talking for them. The authors elaborate on this idea by saying wealthy individuals and corporations seek to influence the direction of the presidential race and of congressional contests (McChesney and Nichols 2013).
