The Functions of DNS and DHCP
Domain Name System (DNS) servers provide name resolution for network clients. DNS maintains information that links a computer’s fully qualified domain name (FQDN) to its assigned IP address(es). DNS translate domain names that are easily understood by humans, to numerical IP addresses. DNS is a vital component of the internet because it is a directory service. The DNS has been widely used since the 1980’s and provides translation services between it and the address spaces of the Internet Protocol. Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) provides the mechanism for automatically configuring client IP addresses, then it notifies the DNS server to update DNS records of that clients name to an IP address. DHCP configures the parameters of the IP addresses automatically from a DHCP server. With the help of DNS and DHCP, it takes a fraction of the time to configure IP address and domain names, which in turn saves money because of less man hours used. To answer the question of how many host does it takes to justify the time and effort to setup a centrally managed solution for name resolution and address allocation is two people, but that’s also is determined by whether or not the business has a LAN setup and has a server that will handle the request(s) for the additional IP address spaces. I would say that it is definitely worthwhile to take the time and
