Charlotte Kingstlinger- Bruhn’s first chapter on “What is Domestic Violence”, provides one with a better understanding of what domestic violence is about. Kingstlinger- Bruhn defines domestic violence as “If one family or household member hits, hurts, or seriously threatens to hurt another family or household member, a serious crime has been committed. It is called domestic violence. And it can send the abuser to jail” (7). UNICEF declares, “Personality and behavioral problems among children exposed to violence in the home can take the forms of psychosomatic illnesses, depression, suicidal tendencies, and bedwetting. Later in life, these children are at greater risk for substance abuse, juvenile pregnancy and criminal behavior than those raised in homes without violence” (53). UNICEF explains the different ways children can be affect by family violence all the way to adolescences in a child’s life. UNICEF’s portrays children expose to domestic violence as “the forgotten victims of violence in home” (50). UNICEF helps the reader interpret how children feel when there is violence in the home and no one there to support their feelings and thoughts.
