The majority of victims of domestic violence are women, which makes for 83% of the victims. On average, every six days a woman in Canada is killed by her abuser (intimate partner). Domestic violence not only causes physical scars, but also mental/psychological scars. Victims of domestic violence carry these scars with them, which haunt most of the victims throughout their life. It affect the behaviour of not only the victim but also the abuser. Domestic violence causes the victim to suffer with mental health disorder, self-loathing and feeling of isolation, fear or shame, and drug abuse.

Firstly, domestic violence causes the victim to suffer with mental health disorder. The victim can get depressed (prolonged sadness or grief) or anxiety. This can lead to the victim not being able to sleep or lose attention at work or anywhere else easily. They might also fear getting in a relationship or a gesture of someone bringing them the memories of traumatic event causing them to might have a panic attack. If the victim has children(s), the children can grow up with those memories as well. They might grow up thinking violence is the answer to everything and might do violent acts. They might also use violence in their intimate relationship to get their way or may not say anything if they get abused as well in future thinking it’s normal in a relationship. The children(s) might also suffer from depression that can cause poor academic performance. They may start acting tough, or have problems attaching to people that can make them angry at anyone who might try to. The children(s) can feel shame which can lead them to bottle up their feelings as well or feel guilty for not being able to help the victim, possibly their mother, that can again cause to them to become angry at others for no
