Dona Marina, also known as Malinalli or Malintzin, played a key role in the Spanish conquest of Central and South America. Dona Marina was an interpreter for the Spanish Conquistador, Hernando Cortes. She was often portrayed in paintings by both Native American artists, as wells as Spanish Artists. Often times, the way that Dona Marina was portrayed differed between Native American and Spanish artists. Native Americans often considered Dona Marina as a Native American, as their own. On the other hand, the Spanish considered her to be European, and Cortes’ mistress. During the sixteenth century, the Spanish Conquistadors began to take control of Central and South America.
