Protest fashion is used to express an individual view on a political statement. A prime example is Lad Gaga’s meat dress, protesting against the ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ policy. For the 2010 MTV VMAs on September 10th Lady Gaga wore the Meat dress to battle social and political views about the matter of the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy.

Lady Gaga’s Meat dress was worn at the 2010 MTV VMAs. Worn in protest calling for awareness of the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy. The ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ policy prohibits Service Members, often in the military, who “demonstrate a propensity or intent to engage in homosexual acts”. Lady Gaga has stated, "For me this evening it's [saying], 'If we don't stand up for what we believe in, if we don't fight for our rights, pretty soon we're going to have as many rights as the meat on our bones'."

The dress was also styled by Nicola Formichetti. The dress was made entirely out of raw beef locally bought from the designers family butchery. “Actually, the 35-pound dress made of a dozen thin-cut flank steaks was being kept on ice. It was frozen stiff — and maggot-free — when it was delivered to Vigilato's American Taxidermy shop 312 weeks later.” The dress was stitched together before she went on stage due to it’ll be difficult to stitch beforehand; this was due to the likeliness of the dress falling
