When Dimmesdale is speaking to Hester in the first scaffold scene, he tells her to tell the people who the father of her child is; Hester does not tell. What is not seen is that when Arthur Dimmesdale says this, he is communicating to Hester that if she doesn't reveal him, he will not. (Pimple, paragraph 8; Milliman, paragraph 2) When Arthur Dimmesdale murmurs, "She will not speak!"..."Wondrous Strength and generosity of a woman's heart! She will not speak!" (Hawthorne, page 74) The crowd sees this as he is saying that she will not reveal who the father is, when in truth he is saying that she will not reveal that he is the father. The scene wherein Arthur Dimmesdale admits to his sin inside the church building, despite the fact that he does confess, Arthur Dimmesdale is not the only person who does this. Outside of The Scarlet Letter, there are many individuals who use double speak. “This won’t hurt a bit.” That is something that doctors use to help make their patients relax, but the moment it hurts they may tense up, which only makes it
