According to many billionaires, “The future of technology is only about one thing: escape from the rest of us” (Rushkoff, 2). These billionaires have built bunkers worth up to $8.3 million. All this work preparing for “The Event”. That was their euphemism for the environmental collapse, social unrest, nuclear explosion, solar storm, unstoppable virus or malicious computer hack that takes everything down”(Rushkoff, 1). The preppers are trying to isolate themselves from the rest of society to be able to be the last ones standing on the earth under any circumstances. Their manic and selfish mindset has made a damaging impact on the rest of society. This shows the selfishness of these billionaires because they called Rushkoff to simply get reassurance about their psychotic ideas. They believe they must do this by making a private bunker to lock themselves away in for the rest of the world and essentially be the last one left in the world. This mindset has been shown in more places than just the case that Ruskkoff writes about. It is shown in the song “Savage Good Boy”. The mindset in the song is to work so hard to get money and go to any extent to do so. It will all be paid off when they are so wealthy they can build a bunker and be the last one standing. The song further demonstrates the manic extent to which these Preppers will go to be the last ones standing. The song makes references to bad behavior, but it will be made up for by the money they make. For example, “That all my bad behavior was just a necessary strain / They’re the stakes in the race to win” (Zauner, lines 11-12). This expands on a quote from the article from one of the preppers stating, “‘Honestly, I am less concerned about gangs with guns than the women at the end of the driveway holding a baby and asking for
