The Effects of Japan’s Labor Force on its Economic Development The labor shortage in Japan has a negative impact on the country’s economic development. The labor shortage can be attributed to an aging workforce, as well as, education gaps and curbs in immigration. Japan’s unemployment rate is about 3 percent. (Trading Economics). Its 3.4% unemployment rate in 2015, has some economists thinking that the country has experienced its second recession in two years. (Martin, Wall Street Journal). Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has attempted to address the labor force shortage by easing the rules to permit more skilled workers into Japan.
