Along with strong logos appeals, Dr. Ben Carson effectively made appeals to pathos in the beginning and middle sections. His introduction was full of emotionally-charged words and phrases that created a sympathetic image; Carson noted that he “was thrown into a situation of dire poverty” and his mother still insisted that “maintaining a dream of education” was important (Para.7).The image he evoked of the challenges and vulnerabilities of being a poor child, as well as high emotions a mother feel at that time effectively introduced the argument and its seriousness. His goal was to make the audience feel sympathy. Addition to this idea were words and phrases such as “thrown”, “Typical tenement”, “Boarded up windows and doors, sirens, gangs,
