Be very good in what you do. There are many people studying psychology that are not good in helping people. They are not professional; they don’t understand or learn how to help others. Helping people is challenging, especially when you are trying to help children.
As a child psychologist, you will have to have an idea of what causes the problem and how to solve it well. Make yourself a friend and work really hard. Sometimes, working with people is heartbreaking. After being in the field for more than 40 years he learned how to get used to that and feel better about it. He says, “You have to learn to be sad but not get involved.”
When asked about what model he uses most often in his practices, he said that it all depends of the child. There is not only one model to follow. You will learn to pick one that will help that child the most. For example, one day he saw a child who was mute. It was a five years old that would not talk.
