King required and had all the confidence he needed. When a negative comment made about him came to his attention, King put a spin on it and made it positive because he was not going to let a petty gossip about him bring him tumbling down. Dr. King acknowledged that “...though I was initially disappointed at being categorized as an extremist, as I continued continued to think about the matter I gradually gained a measure of satisfaction from the label” (King 27). Dr.King knew better and also thought better of himself to let a small comment define him. Again, confidence exhumed Dr. King. More of his confidence is displayed when he says “But more basically, I am in Birmingham because injustice is here” (King 3). You can just imagine the confidence he has when he writes this. It is straight to the point and blunt. Another part of confidence, is sass. As unusual as it sounds, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had a small dash of sass when he wrote “I can assure you that it would have been much shorter if I had been writing from a comfortable desk” (King 31). This comment scintillates with confidence and sass as well because he calls the justice system out in a more polite way. The oppressed people of Birmingham needed a strong, confident leader if they were to achieve justice, so that is what he need to be and
