After reviewing the schedule, it appeared, at least on paper, to be slower afternoon consisting of routine follow ups and seasonal colds. Yet as Dr. Prestbo and I entered the first patient’s exam room, I quickly realized the day was going to be anything but uneventful. After every patient encounter, I was impressed with Dr. Prestbo’s attentiveness to his patients. Listened fully, he addressed each patient’s chief complain being careful not dismissing anything as insignificant. No problem was too small. Particularly, one patient, with a rare genetic disorder, presented in the clinic with her mother complaining of a sore throat. I watched as Dr. Prestbo interviewed the patient as every question calculated and gesture empathetic. Due to the patient’s rare condition, it would have been easier for Dr. Prestbo to interview the patient’s mother. However, Dr. Prestbo intestinally directed each question towards the patient, taking the time to investigate exactly how she was feeling. Throughout the interview, the patient was insistent that she was running a fever. Though the vitals taken prior by the nursing staff showed a normal temperature, Dr. Prestbo indulged the patient asking his nurse to take another temperature. Prestbo invited me to assist one of his colleagues, Dr. Knutson with a vasectomy. Immediately hundreds of thoughts raced through my head, I was excited yet extremely anxious. My facial expressions must have displayed my nervousness, as Dr. Prestbo calmly took me to his office and explained in detail the steps of the procedure. Quickly I was taught simple sterile technique and within an instant I was in the exam room helping Dr. Knutson prepare for the patient.
