The military would define a drone with the acronym U.A.V. which stands for Unmanned Arial Vehicle. A child would define a drone as a flying toy. Some understand drones to be flying cameras while others view them as robots that can help carry things from one point to another. Although drones have many uses they can be simply defined as, “an unmanned aircraft or ship guided by remote control or onboard computers” (Merriam-webster.com, 2015). As with many technologies, war was the catalyst. Towards the end of World War I, Navy training aircrafts were converted into radio controlled UAVs that could carry a 300 pound bomb. These UAVs were designed to act as an aerial torpedo that could be steered towards a target. They took off from wheeled trolleys and had detachable wings. The U.S. military ordered large shipments of them but canceled the order once the war ended. These flying 300 pound bombs were one way drones and were not designed to be reusable (Preble, 2015).
