When I joined the Lufkin Band, I had no idea what a Drum Major was. Until my freshman year, I hadn't ever seen a band march and perform, so I was starstruck when I first saw their performance. I hadn't ever seen anything like it and two people in the front caught my attention, those people being the Drum Majors. They wore white, which contrasted to our purple uniforms, and they marched with such grace and authority. At that moment, I didn't believe it could be me. That position seemed far beyond my reach. When one of my friends that I admired became Drum Major, I was so excited for her. She was an amazing marcher, an extraordinary player and an overall kind person. At that moment, nothing else matters. I am just enjoying myself with the Panther Band. The Lufkin Band is a wonderful program full of brilliant students and staff and I wouldn't change anything specific. But if I had to choose, it would be at the individual level. Some members of the band simply lack respect. It feels as though they don't care and they find the band boring, but as Drum major I would serve as a good example of respect towards the band and band directors. I would also motivate and boost their spirits so that they will enjoy putting in the effort to achieve something greater. I aspire to become a Drum Major for several reasons. Firstly, my own journey in learning to march was not without its challenges. It required time and dedication, as it didn't come naturally to me. Through this experience I've gained an understanding of the difficulties involved in learning to march and now I wish to support others to overcome theirs too. And as a drum major I would be able to reach other sections and serve as a role model for those students who aren't very good at marching to show that they can achieve anything they set their mind
