Each generation presents diverse traits and characteristics. As the up and coming generation, youth have been undergoing scrutiny. There are many who assert that individuals under 30 are the dumbest generation yet. However, those under age 30 are not in fact the dumbest generation, the way that information is processed and accessed is simply accomplished in a less traditional manner. Our society today has made momentous advances in innovation and technology. Minors have grown up with this technology and have grown accustomed to its use in everyday life. This utilization is much more prominent than that of any other generation and is one of the main reasons that the title “Dumbest Generation” has been assigned. The argument is that this cohort of individuals is ignorant and has no interest in regards to the pursuit of knowledge. Mark Bauerlein states, “ask this wired and on-the-go high school senior a few intellectual questions and the facade of the in-the-know-ness crumbles.” (Source 1 p. 168) Being termed the dumbest generation allows incentive to prove all other generations wrong. It seems extremely condescending to label this body before they have truly had an opportunity to make its mark on civilization. Individuals under 30 may be different than the older cohorts, but they are still capable of coherent thought and intellectual conversation. No matter the circumstances each generation may have “dumb” individuals, but it will also have exceptional individuals who will make a difference. Furthermore, those who crafted this label made a “dumb” mistake themselves. A generation is typically a time period of twenty years. However, the group being referenced comprises thirty years. Therefore, the “Dumbest Generation” is not in fact a generation, but a mix of Millennials, Generation X, and Generation
