The warm-up includes a short period of low-intensity aerobic exercise followed by stretching and sports-specific exercise. The purpose of a warm-up is to increase blood flow, muscle temperature, muscle and tendon suppleness, and to enhance functional movement (Fradkin, 2010). According to this study, completing a warm-up increases performance in softball, basketball, bowling, and golf. 92 different warm-up combinations were evaluated, and warm-up increased performance in 79% of the participants observed. These results lead us to believe that any kind of warm-up and stretches are important before competition to maximize performance. Static and dynamic stretching are different but one important aspect is that an athlete must always stretch before any physical …show more content…
One of the pros is that you can do these stretches at a steady pace and focus on the steadiness and stretch of a specific muscle. “With the research it was seen that static stretching could help with injuries to a muscle because there isn’t much overall movement but it makes sure you stretch the muscle as far as possible to get it loose. Static stretching is the preferred technique for after competition to prevent injuries to worn out muscles” (O’Sullivan 2009). Static stretching is very time consuming, especially when you are stretching the whole body. In turn during static stretching your body may cool down because there isn’t any constant movement of the body. Another disadvantage you may have with static stretching is that you can only stretch each muscle within the range of motion it
