E-cigarettes, or vapes, are popular battery-powered devices that deliver nicotine into the body through vapor. Although they were introduced in 2006, vapes have had an increase in popularity since the e-cigarette brand Juul was introduced in 2015. By 2020, the vaping industry was worth more than 15 billion. The debate is whether or not vapes cause harmful side effects, and how the marketing may affect nicotine use in minors. Those who oppose vapes say that vaping could still cause health issues, and that there has been a concerning rise in youth e-cigarette use. Others say that vaping is a safer option than smoking, that it helps others quit smoking, and that it even helps the economy. Inhaling these chemicals can lead to life-threatening consequences. According to ProCon, vaping can result in “depression, lung disease, and stroke.” People who vape are also much more likely to develop a form of heart disease, as opposed to those who don’t. Besides this, e-cigarettes are highly addictive because they contain nicotine. Since there is evidence to suggest that it is not safe, vaping should not be marketed as such. E-cigarette companies such as Juul should be more upfront about the risks involved in vaping, and their advertising should be heavily regulated. An unprecedented effect of e-cigarettes is the increase in nicotine use among teenagers. According to the National Institute On Drug Abuse, “many teens do not even realize that vaping cartridges contain nicotine.” This is likely because e-cigarettes have been promoted as a safe alternative to smoking.
