An educator’s philosophy displays an individual’s belief in the concept of education itself. Our EDU 120 class interviewed Mr.Gibson who reveals his educational philosophies and how he uses them in a classroom setting. Mr. Gibson is now an educator at Eastchester High School in Eastchester, New York. Mr. Gibson’s life is symbolic of the American dream, because, he was the first person in his family to attend elementary school, high school, and college. Mr. Gibson began teaching in the Bronx and ultimately shifted to a career in law. Throughout his years of teaching, he has taught a variety of grade levels and facilities where diversity is evident. He currently has had experiences in Early Childhood, Childhood, Middle Childhood, and college level education.Within the interviewing process, students noticed that Mr. Gibson presents a plethora of qualities from the branches of philosophy. Mr. Gibson’s overall teaching styles can be represented through the branches of philosophy which can include, epistemology, axiology, and ethics. The first philosophical branch that is evident in Mr. Gibson’s teaching was epistemology. Epistemology can be considered a form of questioning on knowledge for both the educators and the students. Mr. Gibson illuminates this questioning of knowledge through group activities in his biology class. Mr. Gibson teaches a Living Environment course to students with autism. Mr. Gibson loves to have his children perform group activities, because it stimulates one’s knowledge on the topic, allows the students to communicate effectively with others and allows the educator to observe how each student handles the task.
