The day I completed my crafting project of the eagle candle-lantern is a day that will live in my heart forever. Like everyone, I wished that I could be an eagle, soaring and exploring because I believed that most of us want to adventure, to go to exciting places where we have never been before. On that day in 1969, I learned that by designing the Eagle Candle Lantern I had developed core attributes: planning, imagination and craftsmanship, which qualified me as a creative craftsman.
In 1969, when I was a sophomore at Notre Dame boarding high school, the call went out for designs of the candle-lanterns from my teacher to find an artful activity to celebrate Christmas. The symbolic meaning of the eagle fascinated me, so I preferred the eagle over the tradition star because of its power and independence. My eagle-candle lantern became especially fashionable when Astronaut Neil Armstrong became the first American to walk on the moon on July 20, 1969. I had become an eagle candle maker like the USA crafted the spaceship. I have lighted my candle lantern to illuminate the dream of space exploring at my school. Moreover, I had fulfilled my artistic dream, and in the process of making the eagle lantern, I learned that making the difference is the key to an artist’s life. It requires the courage to change, to renew and improve the work.
