I’ll start with the Early Christian Church Dance, then the Danse Macabre, the Medieval Dances, The Renaissance, after that we will talk about Ballet, Jazz, and finally Modern. I will also give some other examples with dances from around the world.
The Early Christian Church Dances take place around A.D. 100-500 and where spread all across Europe. The purpose of these dances were to celebrate God and its greatness and they weren’t supposed to be enjoyable or fun. Ballet originated in the courts of the Italian Renaissance in the 15th century and then became a performance dance in Russia as well as in France. It is a very technical art form and is spread worldwide. It has its own vocabulary which is written in French. In this era, people would create and elaborate ballet who would serve a political purpose. They would perform them in large places where the audience could see them from three different angles. Ballet reached its highest peak in France when the King Louis XIV decided to found the Académie Royale de Danse in 1661 where certified dance teachers would teach standards established by the King himself. The famous Paris Opera Ballet was created around that time, and is now one of the best dance company in the world. In 1830, ballet wasn’t as popular as it used to be in France but it was developing in places such as Italy, Denmark, and Russia. It is important to understand that ballet has four different styles: classical ballet, romantic ballet, neoclassical ballet, and contemporary ballet. The two last ones are the beginning of modern and jazz as you will read later on. There are many methods that are used to teach ballet and here’s six of them that are internationally well-knowned and recognized: the French method, the Vaganova method, the Bournonville method, the Royal Academy of Dance method (also known as the English style), the Cecchetti method, and the Balanchine method (also known as the American style). The first ballet ever created was performed about 500 years ago in France and Italy. Since then, a huge amount of ballet have been created and here are a few of them (not in chronologic order) : Cinderella, Coppélia, Don Quixote, Giselle, La Bayadère, La Sylphide, The Nutrcacker, Romeo and Juliet, Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, Esmeralda, La Fille Mal Gardée, Flames of Paris,
