The short story, “Am I Blue”, introduces Vince getting his face smashed in by Butch Corrigan. This beating was caused by Butch assuming Vince was checking him out. This “assumption” is the fundamental reason for Melvin’s existence. The pummeling Vince’s face endures causes him to visualize a fairy godfather, Melvin. Vince’s fairy godfather provides him with methodologies that assist in eschewing violence. For instance, Melvin states he “prefers reform to vengeance” which enforce his non violent methodologies. Melvin is able to provided two crucial methods in order to eschew violence, and assist in curbing the “assumptions”.
