This post will discuss and review the concepts of epidemiology in disease control and prevention, and apply ecosocial epidemiology paradigm (macro-level) to diabetes mellitus.

Epidemiology is the process used to find the reasons health outcomes and diseases happen to the population (What is Epidemiology?, 2016). A person, place, and time model is a process that epidemiologist use when a disease is in the community (Nies & McEwen, 2015). They look at what factors such as where the person lives and the time frame a disease is happening. In addition, an ecosocial paradigm focuses more on a person’s risk factors to be aware of different origins of a disease (Nies & McEwen, 2015). Diabetes due to obesity and poverty is a big issue in the community. The ecosocial paradigm will look at reasons why certain areas have an increase rise in diabetes compared to other places (Nies & McEwen, 2015). There are ways to prevent diabetes, such as in

If people are without insurance, or financial needs they cannot afford their insulin or oral medications. This relates to the agents of disease for chemical agents (Nies & McEwen, 2015). In addition they also cannot afford healthier foods to “eat right.” So, instead they are getting the cheapest foods, such as fast food or frozen dinners. These foods are high in sodium and carbohydrates, which can lead to obesity. When a patient runs out of diabetic testing strips they will not buy more because they use the little money they have to buy food, which is related to human behavior in the host factor category (Nies & McEwen, 2015). This will prevent them from monitoring their blood sugars and having a control of their diabetes. By not exercising and continuing to eat poorly, diabetes will continue to rise in our community. One reasoning may be fewer jobs in the area. When people are out of a job, they may get depressed, and use eating as a stress
