On August 27, 1906 Ed Gein was born to Augusta T. Lehrke and George P. Gein. Gein was born in La Crosse, Wisconsin. He had an older brother named Henry G. Gein, who was Ed’s fully biological brother. Ed’s father was violent, constantly unemployed, and was an alcoholic. Not only did both Ed and his brother reject their father, but their mother did as well. But divorce was not an option due to the family being extremely religious. His mother was very controlling of her sons’ lives. She only permitted Gein to leave the premises in order to go to school. Augusta eventually purchased a farm on the outskirts of a small town, Plainfield, and moved her family out there. She moved to such a desolate location in order to prevent outsiders from influencing her sons. His mother was also fanatically religious. She believed that alcohol was evil, that sex should have the sole purpose of procreation, and above all else that all women, save herself, were whores. Eventhough he had a poor social development, Gein managed to do very well in school. Gein’s father died in 1940. After his death, Henry began to reject Augusta’s idea of the world. He would even bad-mouth her when Ed was within hearing range. A couple years later, in March 1944, the two brothers found themselves caught in the middle of a brush fire that started on their farm. Ed ran to the police and brought them to the house, all the while telling them that he had lost track of his brother while attempting to escape from the fire. Then he lead police directly to the corpse of his brother. There was evidence of blunt force trauma but the police concluded that he had died of asphyxiation due to smoke inhalation.
