Many people who experience a traumatic event tend to hold onto their experience; however, Edith Eger thought about the recovery process differently, as she experienced inhumane things firsthand. She once stated, "You can't change what happened; you can't change what you did or what was done to you. But you can choose how you live now..." (Eger, The Choice). Edith Eva Eger was a Jewish female who, at just sixteen years old, lived through several inhumane acts when she and her family were sent to Auschwitz. Auschwitz was one of the most notoriously known Nazi concentration camps. The early life of Edith Eger did not have many conflicting hardships in comparison to those she faced later in her life. Growing up dreaming of being a professional ballerina as well as excelling in gymnastics, Edith led a happy childhood filled with cherishable memories. Then, unexpectedly, when she and her family were sent off to Auschwitz, they disbanded upon arrival. Having to adjust to this new way of living during the Holocaust was a major challenge due to the lack of humanity that Jewish people were being given during these circumstances. Finally, Edith was able to say she came out of the Holocaust alive, as she has led her journey to where it is today because of her determination and the path of discovery she took. She is a physiologist who can help others overcome their dark periods. Looking back at what Holocaust survivors had to endure makes you realize how lucky you are.
