Dear Mr. McCoy:
My name is Kiersten Jackson and I have applied for the 6th grade mathematics teacher position at Spring Lake Middle School. I am especially interested in Pauline Jones because of its commitment to providing a safe and caring environment that is conductive to learning and high academic achievement, fosters awareness of cultural diversity and individuality, and empowers students with the necessary skills to become life-long learners.
I received my Bachelor of Science degree in secondary education with an emphasis in mathematics from the University of Nevada Las Vegas in December of 2012. During the Practicum I of my teaching experience as a UNLV student, I was gifted with the privilege of teaching at Helen C. Cannon Junior High School, an at risk school in the Las Vegas Valley. Teaching such a large population of non-native English speakers, I focused largely on a balance of mathematics and literacy in my classroom, realizing that true understanding of mathematics cannot be had without strength in literacy. I encouraged my students to speak “the language of math,” focusing on precision of the vocabulary surrounding Common Core State Standards. Through both summative and formative assessment, I constructed evaluations that reflected student progress and allowed for integrated differentiation.
In addition to Practicum I, I completed Practicum II and my official student teaching semesters at Palo Verde High School. It is there that I honed in on my strengths as a secondary mathematics teacher with the help of my site
