1874 was the year of interracial violence in campaigns and elections. Edward Douglass White was appointed as an Associate Justice for the Louisiana Supreme Court. He served from 1879 to 1880, soon after he was re-elected, served from 1888 to 1892. White was famous in Louisiana for helping to abolish the Louisiana Lottery. Soon the lottery case reached the State’s Supreme Court. The state ordered them to discontinue the gaming in 1894. Due to this act the state’s legislature appointed White to the United States Senate in 1891. He served until March 12, 1894, which was when he was nominated by President Grover Cleveland to be an Associate Justice for the Supreme Court of the United States.
Edward Douglass White was appointed to the Chief Justice by President Grover Cleveland, which was preceded by Samuel Blatchford. White got this opportunity because he was promoted from the Associate Justice for the Louisiana Supreme Court. Edward was commissioned on February 19,1894, unfortunately he was not sworn in until March 12, 1894.
