Edwidge Danticat's Krik? Krak !

Few Americans have knowledge about Haiti and the tragedies that the country has gone through. In Edwidge Danticat’s Krik? Krak!, originally published in 1991, she shows her audience the audacities that happened during the Duvalier’s dictatorship. Danticat makes clear that in addition to enduring massive struggles they are also going through emotional strife’s, such as heartbreak. While these forms of troubles may not seem as difficult as the abundant amount of hardships the others have gone through, the heart break is still painful to these characters. The unnamed man is on a boat headed to America with a large amount of people, in an attempt to escape Haiti. The Unnamed woman is aiming to survive the country which is falling apart due to a failed coup d’état against Haiti’s fierce family of dictators, the Duvaliers. She tries to stay hopeful as the Tonton Macutes attempt to take her away, although her father tries his best to keep them from taking her. The two characters face different outcomes at the end of the short story. The man’s boat sinks into the ocean off of the coast of Jamaica, finally becoming one of the ‘children of the sea’. The woman is unable to escape death with her families love, but is always reminded of her love that had perished into the sea. The narrator of “Caroline’s Wedding” Is Caroline’s sister, Gracina (Grace) Azile, who, along with their mother and Caroline, immigrated to America from Haiti. The chapter tells the story of different generations and different cultures conflicting due to Caroline marrying a non-Haitian man. It is against Haitian believes to marry someone out of the same culture. Caroline’s mother attempts to separate the two by using a soup made of bones that is believed to keep lovers apart.
