Edwidge Danticat as the author told us that she was afraid of her uncle’s story about the carnival that make her want to use her mask to be distant herself as the observer behind the mask from people who attend carnival so she will have a chance to study individual without show her identify. The concept of wearing a mask may have many different purposes for the traveler as an individual. The mask is one way to hide traveler’s face, therefore, people won’t able to figure out who that person and their reasons to use a mask. The traveler may try use mask to fit their culture along with society. I know this for sure, the individual would not use a mask to defense their indefinite around people that s/he know and able to trust. She slowly made an adjustment and have the second mask to fit the villagers in Africa. She had two different masks at the end of her travel experience. When she shows villagers what she could do with a mask as a traveler and they decided she deserve to be part of their family because she have a great attitude toward their culture and help them understand things better than before. As a traveler, you wouldn’t want to discriminate or make the nasty comment about their culture with masks at all. It will be so offense to their country as it showed that you don’t appreciate their effort no matter how their culture looks
