The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, also known as the EEOC, is a government entity that aimed to rid the workplace of discrimination. It originally had very little power to punish employers, but in 1972 the Congress gave the EEOC the right to sue employers.

In 1961, the then President, John F. Kennedy issued Executive Order 10925 which would later become known as the EEOC, and it was originally meant to eliminate the racial discrimination that plagued the country at the time from the workplace.
