The main ideas or themes that struck you from my article are Being an effective communicator entails speaking clearly, yes, but it also involves nonverbal cues, written words, and listening skills. Communication is a two-way street; part of your job as a coach is to teach players communication skills and how to use them appropriately. In the article they speak about the different stages of coaching and the roles that coaches play. They speak about how the coaches often assume that people know how to communicate, but that is not the case at all. This article stresses the importance of teaching players instead of assuming that they are aware why and how you should communicate. I was not surprised by much of the information that was presented in article or in the book because in a way I see it as common sense. If you do not open your mouth and speak to those around it is impossible to be successful. It caught my attention that many different people feel the exact same way about communication. My coaches and parents have no connection with the writer of this article or the book, but their thoughts are identical. I do not feel that I learned anything new when reading this article and the book because my coaches and parents have always taught me the importance of communication. In order to be the head coach of a team it requires a large amount of communication so that things are clear. If our coach did not communicate with us than we would be lost. Everything runs through our coach and it is our job as players to understand produce what our coaches are asking us to. I have always been taught that you suffer in the long run by holding things in and not communicating. Growing up I felt that being outspoken was a bad thing and people looked me crazy for doing so. The older I got the more I realized that it was much easier to just speak on specific things instead of just agreeing. Sports is where I feel that I was able to freely communicate with others because you must communicate so that things can function properly. There were many different occasions where my teammates and I got in trouble for not communicating on the floor. I can remember specifically one day in practice we were not communication. Our coach stopped the drills and took two defensive players off of the floor. Three people having to defend five players without scoring was very difficult and caused us to communicate unless we wanted to be pushed. That specific day taught me the importance of communicating on the floor and the success that can come from it. I believe that over the years communication helped me find my own identity on and off of the court. People saw how vocal I was and eventually begin to look at me as a leader because they always expected me to speak up and state my
